Several students have received questionable emails that stated their accounts had been hacked. In reality, the accounts were fine and the messages were phishing emails by opportunistic scammers.
The scammers reportedly sought to obtain information for iTunes gift cards, or demanding money to ensure that the student doesn’t lose access to the account
This week, Craig Tunks, the director of digital learning of technology, sent a message to parents warning them of the scam.
“The hacker email may contain messages saying they have obtained access to your account and are demanding money to ensure that you do not lose access,” he wrote to parents. “This is an attempt to exploit information or money through this threat.
“These are phishing messages attempting to gain confidence through the apparent sender’s name or threats. Do not engage any of these messages. As a general rule of thumb, if your intuition is picking up on something not being quite right, you should call or email the help-desk before responding.”
Tunks said that anyone who receives a questionable email should forward it to phishing@westonps.org.
